Peter Greenway is a British intellectual director who combines Baroque aesthetics with a postmodern game.
A: Analysis
The analytical video-essé is in the form of a cinematic alphabet. Key letters reveal the director’s image system and his visual language.
B: Brand
Homo Cinematicus and Avia Poetica are declarations and manifesto.
Homo Cinematicus is a person whose nature and perception are formed through movies. Avia Poetica is a poetic flight, a movement of thought and emotion that goes beyond logic and calculation. Together, they create harmony where anatomy is intertwined with poetry, science with ecstasy, and accuracy with theatrical passion.
The central image is an anatomical theatre in the plan: a circle of amphitheater, and an audience over a dissected object.
Z: Film studio booking
It represents the film studio as a scientific archive where art exists in the form of «invisible creatures» classified by the laws of Greenway aesthetics.
The metaphor is that the director is the last exhibit to escape from his own collection. But even the empty cage continues the play.
An archive film out of 16 versions of Ophelia’s death. Every death is like a dried flower: a fragment of memory, an interpretation, or a myth. No version claims the truth.
An anonymous archivist opens an ancient box with the mysterious name Herbarium Morbidum. Inside it are 16 glass containers containing Ophelia’s death. Every discovery of the capsule opens the door to the new world, but all these deaths are fictional, theatreic, and often contradictory.
