Metro Station Rzhevskaya Design Project
Modern metro has long ago stopped being just a means of transport carrying a passenger to the desired place through the shortest route. Today the metro is more than any other means of public transport determines the architectural profile and the comfort of the space in large cities. The main idea of the project is creating the comfortable light space and stepping aside the feeling of a catacomb.
Rzhevskaya is the projected station of the Moscow metro third interchange circuit. It will be opened between Sheremetyevskaya and Stromynka stations in Meschanskiy region. The projected place is the territory under Rizhsky radio market. The stations railways will go under the suburb trains railways and the Railway Museum. The station will have an interchange to Rizhskaya station. Two ground-level pavilions will be built: one on Rzhevskaya square, another one — with the subway to Rizhsky railway station.
A gradient yellow stained-glass window was used in the entrance area, which in sunny weather fills the room with a bright warm glow. The shaping element is the arch which softens the rigid rhythm of the modular grid, which is the basis for the design of the station. The modular grid, in its turn, creates a smooth and calm background. The station is created in the style of minimalism, since the architectural forms are not the main ones in the project, the light stands in the first place.
It is the general light, which plays a key role in subway lighting, that allows a person to overcome the fear of absolute darkness in a closed space. The lack of sunlight and the unconscious fear of being underground can cause not only a slight feeling of discomfort, but also serious panic attacks. Therefore, creating an imitation of natural light is the most important task of the project.
The project included an interactive moment that would allow the passengers to shape the space, become part of it and make the space interesting. Any visible light sources are removed. The light is distributed in oval portals to achieve a soft, even, almost daylight effect. Further developing the theme of the lighting, the light panels that light up and shimmer from human movement, installed in the places of maximum movement: an escalator zone, an underpass and a platform, were used.
